Like many retirees, Joe and Maura Cato thought that slowing down was next on their agenda. However, their vast south coast parcel of land at Foxground, which came complete with its own rainforest, was crying out for something a little grittier.

Instead of sitting back and taking it slow after their tree change to the 30ha estate near Kiama, the couple decided that such a stunning slice of land deserved a home that would do it justice.

One year later and with a Grand Designs Australia camera crew thrown into the mix, the pair have begun a new life off the grid in a bold new rammed earth home which is both sensitive to the seasons while being adaptable to their lifestyle.

Although the four-bedroom house would be home to just the two of them, a clever pavilion design means the Catos can open up, or close off, half the house when their three adult children are not visiting.
