Perched high on a sandstone outcrop beside the Lane Cove River, the Terra Firma residence is a striking example of architecture rooted in the landscape – both literally and conceptually. Designed by Luigi Rosselli Architects, the three-story home combines natural materials such as rammed earth, recycled brick, reclaimed sandstone, and terracotta roof tiles to create a warm, grounded haven for its owners, who are lifelong sailors.

Evolution Windows was engaged to supply and install a range of bespoke Aluminium window and door systems, designed to meet the architect’s exacting aesthetic vision and the project’s demanding site conditions. Central to our scope was the engineering and installation of a fully custom, operable porthole pivot window an – architectural statement piece.

Meeting this challenge required a performance-based engineering solution to demonstrate compliance with the Building Code of Australia. Detailed structural analysis, documentation, and a carefully coordinated installation process ensured the pivoting mechanism met all functional and safety requirements. The result is a beautifully executed circular window that opens smoothly, remains structurally sound under wind load, and adheres to all relevant glazing and safety standards.

Another standout feature was the expansive fixed bay window in the master bedroom. Measuring 2,585mm by 5,015mm, it was installed in two large sections with a seamless 90-degree lapped corner, crafted from 15mm clear toughened glass. This detail allows for a completely uninterrupted view of the bay below, enhancing the feeling of openness and connection to the water. Due to the site’s steep incline and limited street access, the glazing units were craned into position with careful precision, ensuring a safe and efficient installation.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with the builder and architect to achieve seamless transitions between inside and out. This included integrating our 704B window system into custom stainless-steel drainage channels to create a flush threshold, preserving both the aesthetic intent and practical usability of key living areas. All sliding doors featured Icon Flush Pull hardware, reinforcing a consistent, refined design language throughout the home.

Installing windows and doors into rammed earth construction presented another layer of complexity. Our team undertook meticulous planning to ensure the products were safely and securely fixed to this unique substrate without compromising the wall structure or aesthetics. Heavy lifting was carried out exclusively by crane, operated by certified personnel, to eliminate manual handling risks and maintain safe work practices on site.

Despite the technical complexity of the project, including bespoke engineering and challenging logistics, the on-site window and door installation was completed in just eight days – well within the projected lead time.

Our ability to coordinate, adapt, and deliver with precision ensured that the architect’s vision was fully realised, without compromise. From the one-of-a-kind pivot window to the expansive corner-glazed bay, every element was executed with care and attention to detail.
